Lamar is a small town located in Darlington County, South Carolina. It was incorporated in 1889 and named after Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, a former Secretary of the Interior and Supreme Court Justice. The town grew around a railroad depot and became a hub for agriculture and textile manufacturing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Lamar has been home to a number of notable individuals, including former South Carolina Governor Robert Evander McNair and professional golfer Tommy Gainey.
The population of Lamar has remained relatively stable over the years, with around 1,000 residents currently calling the town home.
Lamar is situated in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, surrounded by rolling farmland and pine forests. The town is located about 30 miles east of Florence and 70 miles west of Myrtle Beach.
